Picture the scene. It’s Christmas day. You’ve opened your presents. You’ve eaten enough turkey to last you until next Christmas. You’re a bit drunk, a bit sleepy, you’ve put your pyjamas back on and your nan is snoring in the armchair next to you. And it’s only 4pm. There’s only one thing for it: a Christmas movie.
We’ve compiled a few of our fave Christmas movies, complete with our most beloved scenes, to ensure boredom is kept at bay this Christmas. After all, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear…
Love Actually’s “to me, you are perfect”
Whether you love or loathe Keira Knightley, this is the scene that could melt the coldest ice queen’s heart. We can’t but help wonder what would have happened if the husband had answered the door. Or if his tape player didn’t work. Or if he got his cards in the wrong order. Luckily, it all went to plan and he managed to get a little snog out of it. Well done, son.
Elf realising Santa’s coming
It was really, really hard to pick our favourite scene from Elf. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without Will Ferrell in tights gracing our screens as we scoff dry leftover turkey sandwiches. The announcement that Santa will be making an appearance at the Gimbel department store never fails to have us in stitches.
Bridget Jones at the turkey curry buffet
New Year’s Day is arguably the most challenging and character-building day of the year. It’s the start of a new year, and you already hate yourself because you drank more cheap champagne than any human should drink in one sitting. The alcohol is seeping through your pores, and you have a family lunch to get through. Or if you’re like Bridget Jones, the annual turkey curry buffet, where you spend the afternoon dodging questions about why you’re still single from that woman you call Aunty Pam (who isn’t actually your Aunt). We couldn’t compile this list without including the hysterically cringy and iconic reindeer jumper scene.
Home Alone 2 – Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal
Remember when Macaulay Culkin was cute? It may seem like a distant memory, but thankfully the Home Alone movies are always on TV at Christmas to remind us. We like to order a pizza at Christmas, just so that we can say “keep the change, ya filthy animal.”
E.T caught wearing a dress
There are two occasions when it’s okay to cry at Christmas. The first is when your partner buys you the wrong gift, even after months of subtle hints. The second is when watching E.T. The scene when E.T dresses up in a young Drew Barrymore’s wardrobe is one of cutest moments a movie ever, and never fails to make us smile.
The Polar Express – The Hot Chocolate song
If you don’t like hot chocolate, and songs about hot chocolate, then we’re not sure we can be friends with you. Now if only there really was a magical train to transport us to the North Pole…
We couldn’t possibly fit all the best bits into one post! If we’ve missed your favourite movie moment, let us
