We love east London for so many reasons, but its incredible food scene is definitely right up there. So we’re always on the look-out for awesome new places to feed our hungry tums. Canalside, which is Here East’s newest destination on the bank of the Lee Canal, fills us with excitement as a new spot for gorgeous grub… so we decided it was only fair to investigate! We chatted to Shane Harrison, the man behind restaurant Shane’s On Canalside to see why we should visit!
Tell us about Shane’s
As a Kiwi I grew up spending hours outdoors hunting, fishing and foraging. After training as a chef I wanted to share my passion for seasonal wild food.
At Shane’s we offer wild meats, line caught fish, wild foraged seasonal produce, sourcing our food from small ethical producers, people that care. Our menu changes with the colours and flavours of the environment. Field to plate it’s that simple.
The restaurant has a cosy casual atmosphere where nothing is a problem and you are made to feel at home. Our food is honest and so is our pricing. We want our customers to leave with a feeling of satisfaction.
What makes your restaurant different to any other?
Our menu is constantly changing to suit the seasons. Our chefs go foraging each week and now we offer 2-hour tours to Hackney Marshes to help educate others on what can be accessed from your local surroundings.
And shortly we’ll be running workshops on how to make your own sloe gin, so keep your eyes peeled!
Have you enjoyed your first summer spent on Canalside at Here East? Why this location?
We’ve loved it! We’ve become quite fond of the locals already and the Here East crowd are like family now. When we heard about Here East we jumped at the chance of being part of such a diverse, innovative and ever-changing area.
What menu item would you recommend we try?
Wild pavé of venison with beetroot puree, kale, nettle & rose hip jus has to be one of my favourite dishes. I loved food that’s had a life!
What events do you have coming up?
Over the next couple of months we have a foraging tours for learners, artisanal wine tasting, our Day of the Dead Halloween party, where you can expect pumpkin carving, fancy dress, DJs, silly dancing & themed cocktails all night. We also have fun lively Christmas parties booking up fast (both corporate and social events)!
What’s one of your favourite things about Shane’s?
The family feel; my ethos and the people I’ve carefully selected to work with me make Shane’s the place you want to visit again. There’s no double booking tables here at Shane’s, everyone’s welcome to stay the whole evening and enjoy great company, wine and cocktails.
And finally – when you’re not working or hanging out at Shane’s, what are your other favourite spots in London to visit?
Usually enjoying the company of friends and travelling around with Edna, Hackney’s favourite bulldog; or escaping to the country for the weekend.
