London Launch: Mercato Metropolitano Street Market

Hold tight and get ready to hear all about one of our new favourite spots south of the river! The ultra-cool Mercato Metropolitano market can be found in ‘Sobo’ (south of Borough) in a previously disused paper factory. If this place is yet to hit your radar, read on to find out a little more about what it has to offer…

The SE1 venue opened in June this year and specialises in small producers from all over Italy and the UK, meaning there’s loads to choose from – whatever your mood! We’re sure this place will have just what you fancy, whether you’re stocking up on fresh produce for the week from the onsite bakery, fishmongers or butchers, or are looking to grab your lunchtime fill from the coffee roasters, pizza chefs or artisan beer makers.

Mercato is led by the mantra that they want to have a small impact on everyone’s well-being; they draw on the principles that ‘small is beautiful’ and ‘natural is good.’ Partly because of this, the food and produce on offer is made with love – and we’re sure will leave you wanting more. We’re yet to try the pizza, but photos alone are making our mouths water so we know what we’re going to be doing this weekend…

Their principles mean they focus on small-scale farmers, local producers and members of the local community – everything they do is centred around sustainability and the economic and social aspects of the community. That’s the great thing about this place, it’s very much about bringing the community together. Keep your eyes peeled for frequent feel-good events too – they recently held a night with popular choir Some Voices, which we hear was a success all round!

Not only is the food fresh and delicious, there are also loads of educational activities and cultural exhibitions for all to enjoy. If you’re looking for somewhere to keep the kids entertained, Mercato is a great shout as it provides families with the opportunity to come and learn about food and nutrition. Whether it’s activities in the urban garden or talks with the producers of their favourite ingredients on site, this place is a must-visit!

Visit Mercato, 42 Newington Causeway, SE1 6DR, on Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 11pm. Have you been? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
