What could be better than Monopoly and tea or a pint? Nothing. Luckily, we’re not the only ones to think so, and loads of great venues are popping up around London Town to combine our love of gaming with our love of drinking. When you’re in the mood for Scrabble and cider, beer and Buckaroo or tea and Trivial Pursuit, check out this list of our favourites.
337 Acton Mews, Haggerston, E8 4EA
Draughts is the original board game bar in London and can be found nestled in the heart of Hackney. There are more than 500 board games to choose from, including the more conventional such as Cluedo, to the more obscure (think Love Letter and Mice and Mystics). But it’s not just games, there are loads of tantalizing soft drinks, craft ales, beers and cocktails to enjoy while you put your best game face on. It costs £5 to play the games, but if you ask us, it’s a small price to pay for hours of enjoyment.
100-106 Leonard Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 4RH
This super-chilled Shoreditch bar has become an increasingly popular spot to enjoy a good board game, a cocktail and even a game of Ping Pong. With minimalist décor that has barely changed since opening, it’s become a well-known place to visit – and not just for the games! Its cocktails are both delicious AND wittily named. We’ve heard that the “Lorraine Kelly” is particularly good…
25 West Ham Lane, E15 4PH
It was the ever-cool streets of Tokyo that provided the inspiration for this super cool bar. Despite this, the bar has evolved to take on its own distinct character and offers a variety of games, including the ever popular and totally inappropriate card game Cards against Humanity. You would have thought that the fact that these games are available to play for free is the best part about the bar. You’d be wrong. It also offers cocktails that are game-themed! What could be better than that?!
3 Torrens St, London EC1V 1NQ
With a name like the Candid Café, who could resist playing a spot of Scrabble there? Hidden away through a tiny door and up two flights of stairs in Angel, it may be quite difficult to find, but it’s certainly worth it when you do! Not only that, but it’s also open late, has very comfy chairs AND an outdoor courtyard that’s just gorgeous when it’s sunny/warm. Perfect for some late-night gaming!
132 Lower Marsh, Lambeth, SE1 7AE
It may look a little haphazard from the outside, but Scooter Caffe is THE most perfect place to play board games if you’re a fan of classic games combined with good coffee. The good people at Scooter Caffe make coffee with their retro 1957 Faema Espresso Machine and it’s great! It’s also open late as well, so you can give in to that late-night board game and coffee fix. Well worth a visit… or two!
