It’s now only five sleeps until the annual Virgin London Marathon, which takes place this Sunday 22nd April 2018! For all those planning to head into the big city to watch the race, we’ve put together a few insider tips to help you enjoy the day and avoid the chaos.
The Virgin Money London Marathon is one of the world’s biggest one-day running and fundraising events. The incredible course and amazing atmosphere have established it as one of the World Marathon Majors and a must-do on many bucket-lists. Running against a backdrop of roaring crowds, tens of thousands of runners will be taking on the 26.2 miles (or 42 kilometres!) all while passing some of the most iconic landmarks of the beautiful city.
If you are planning to cheer on your loved ones while catching a glimpse of them running the Marathon, do bear in mind that there will be many road closures and the only way to get around will be via public transport. But don’t worry London Underground, London Overground and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) all lay on extra services on Race Day which will help you get swiftly from A to B.
It is also warned that some areas of the course are busier than others which will make it difficult to get a good viewing spot. These include Greenwich town centre, the Cutty Sark, Tower Hill and anywhere from mile 24 to the finish in The Mall. And while the ship is undoubtedly a beautiful backdrop for the race, the crowds that are attracted here can make spectating uncomfortable so it is advised to avoid this area.
Despite the snow and cold weather over the recent weeks, believe it or not this Sunday we are forecast for some sunshine. Remember to pack a hat and some sunscreen especially if you’re planning to watch the race for a few hours – it will be a good opportunity to build up that summer tan.
