January is often a difficult time of year. With waistlines bursting at the seams, too much leftover turkey and nowhere near enough leftover cash, you can find yourself wishing the month away. Then you remember you drunkenly promised your friends you’d finally take on Dry January this year, and it just gets worse! But fear not, we’re here to show you
that Dry January can even be fun if you do it in style. Try these five tips, and thank us later…
Hit a coffee shop
A coffee shop will now be your new best friend! However, in London there’s so much choice that you certainly don’t need to stick to the same spot for the entire month. For a seriously good cup, try the excellent Kaffeine (two locations in the West End) or the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs in the heart of Soho. However, for when you want to try something a little out of the ordinary – try London’s one and only cat café, Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium in Shoreditch, or London’s first board game café, Draughts in Haggerston. If all the coffee gets too much, you could even switch your next caffeine boost for a cooling milkshake from American-style diner The Love Shake in Shoreditch.
Now that you’re not spending all your hard-earned cash on drinks out with friends, it’s likely you’ll have a few more pennies to spare. Treat yourself to that facial you’ve been talking about for ages or that Bikram Yoga session you’ve always been intrigued to try. There are several places to give this a whirl; BikramYogaLondon have an office right in the heart of the City in Canary Wharf and Hot Bikram Yoga have a studio in Southwark. Come on, you have no excuses!
Now you’re not drinking, you may even be tempted to go the whole hog and do a full body detox… If you’re also cutting out the sugar, you can try sugar-free options like cupcakes from Lola’s Cupcakes (various locations) or the amazing vegan-friendly milkshakes from Cookies and Scream in Camden. If you’re more into savoury food, check out The Grain Store in King’s Cross which has delicious, healthy food such as baked beetroot carpaccio.
Grab yourself a partner
Everything is easier when you have a friend who is suffering alongside you. Grab your flatmate, boyfriend, sister, great aunt, neighbour’s friend’s brother-in-law – anyone you can think of really! This will give you someone to talk to during those awkward nights out when your beverage of choice is a glass of bubbles – soda or lemonade of course!
If you can’t find a friend who’s willing to join you in your post-festive detox, then there are plenty of apps and websites that will keep you going. Check out the AlcoDroid Alcohol Tracker and the iDrinkSmarter apps. These offer a blood alcohol tracker, blood alcohol content calculator, and a drinks diary to help you keep motivated during your month off.
Despite being an obvious choice, mocktails are the way forward this month – especially if you are out with friends who aren’t committing to sobriety this month. It can be hard not to be tempted by the myriad of cocktails out there – after all, London does cocktails well! Luckily, you will not face this problem at Redemption Bar in Notting Hill. Completely alcohol-free, it serves some delightful coconut water-based drinks alongside delicious vegan snacks. This is definitely one not to miss.
