Mother’s Day is upon us and if (like us!) it’s hit you out of nowhere and you’ve had little time to prepare, we’ve done the hard work for you and found you a bunch of last minute places for you and your mum to enjoy. So pick her up on Sunday and take her out and about in the city for the day. Here’s our picks of how you can cheat your way to a great day, with minimal planning required!
What can I do when I can’t find any flowers on Sunday morning?
Kew Gardens’ Orchids Festival 2016
Kew Gardens, Richmond, TW9 3AB
6 February – 6 March, 10am – 4pm
It doesn’t matter if your local M&S is sold out of flowers, because it turns out you can catch the final weekend of Kew Gardens’ Orchids festival instead! Billed as a spectacular carnival of dazzling Brazilian colours, the flower festival is a stunning array of colourful orchids showcased in the superb setting of Kew Gardens’ Princess of Wales Conservatory. Better than any bunch of flowers! You can even book an afternoon tea at the Kew Gardens Orangery afterwards to make your mum’s visit extra special. Information and ticket prices can be found here.
How can I make a Sunday morning walk different to our usual family walks?
Walk In Her Shoes with CARE International
Starting at The Scoop, Queen’s Walk, SE1 2DB
6 March, 10am
Forget that relaxed walk around the local park and get down to CARE International’s Walk In Her Shoes walk! If your mum enjoys supporting her fellow ladies, take a bit of time on Mother’s Day morning to bring her down to this walk in solidarity with women and girls worldwide – ahead of International Women’s Day. CARE believe that ‘the best way we can make feminism relevant to anyone is to ask how they would want their own mum to be treated; fairly, kindly and with respect. There isn’t a better time to march on behalf of women and girls around the world than Mother’s Day.’ We couldn’t agree more! Expect stories, speeches and entertainment galore at this celebration of the ladies in our lives and ladies all over the world.

How can I make it a day to remember when I’ve left it so late to plan?
Alexandra Palace Bar & Kitchen
Alexandra Palace Way, N22 7AY
The best thing about planning last minute is… you can have a lot more confidence in the weather forecast! It’s due to be a clear day in London on Sunday, which to us means get up high in the city and share a drink and a bite to eat with a view to remember. Our pick would be Alexandra Palace’s Bar & Kitchen. Think casual Sunday pub vibes with a beer garden and modern pub menu – in a stunning setting! At prices much more reasonable than those sold out Mother’s Day specials in London’s central hotspots. Perfect!
