The smell of barbecues has been wafting its way across London for a couple of weeks now, but without following the smells, it can be tricky to know where you can/can’t light one up. Not all parks have a license to grill, so make sure to check out our list so you’re in-the-know this summer.

Highbury Hill, N5 1AR
When the sun comes out, the crowds flock to Highbury Fields like clockwork. Boasting large grassy areas, an adventure play area for the little ones and a café (just in case your food gets charred beyond repair), this makes an ideal spot to get your grill on. Despite being a popular choice, there’s plenty of park to go round. With 29 acres, you shouldn’t be short of space to cook, explore or simply cloud-gaze. And if your barbecue session really heats up, there’s even a swimming pool to help you cool off.
Note that only ‘kettle’ type barbecues are to be used to reduce smoke levels, and they must be elevated as to not damage the grass.
Hackney, E8 3EU
London Fields provides a glorious space to help satisfy your barbecue cravings in east London. There’s a designated area for all your outdoor cooking needs, as well as a lido, tennis courts and a cricket pitch if you then fancy running off those sausages!
As with Highbury Fields – all barbecues must be used with a metal stand to keep the grass looking green and lush.

Fred Wells Gardens
St Mary’s Park, SW11
Fred Wells Gardens is a beautiful tree-enclosed spot nestled in the leafy district of Battersea. The well-kept area only has one designated barbecue station free for flipping upon, but catch it when it’s free and it makes for a lovely outdoor feasting spot. Once you’ve refuelled, there’s also a children’s play area, tennis court, formal gardens and shrubberies to explore!
Camden, NW1 9AA
When it comes to public barbecuing, Camden council is really leading the way – having lifted the ban on all parks (excluding Hampstead Heath, Regents Park and Primrose Hill). Cantelowes Gardens is just one of the parks to pick from and offers plenty of open space for your burger flipping. Also, being perched next to Camden Town, it’s only a short hop to the shops if you’ve forgotten any important supplies – or to the pub if the weather takes a turn!
