Whether you know Elephant & Castle like the back of your hand or are new to the area – there’s lots to explore! Luckily for you, we’ve found the perfect way for you to discover the rich history and culture of this south London spot. What’s that you may ask? City Hunt! If you’re yet to hear about this exciting new urban treasure hunt taking the city by storm, read on…
Conceived and organised by Ugly Duck, a south London based creative social enterprise, City Hunt is an interactive game which gets members of the community exploring new areas through online and offline participation. Once registered online, players are invited to solve a series of clues via their smartphones, while hunting for the answers around Elephant & Castle! At each point, players will uncover interesting facts about different locations, as well as scoring points for each clue solved. Prizes will be up for grabs for the speediest seeker or player who completes the most clues, making it an exciting and highly rewarding activity for all involved!
With the hunt taking place through the half term holidays, City Hunt will also offer illustrated maps designed specifically for children as an alternative to the mobile version. This will allow all ages to get involved and enjoy exploring the area! Players can choose to take on the hunt alone or get a team together and see how many clues they can solve as a group.
As well as discovering hidden facts about this vibrant and historic area, local artists have also designed Elephant artwork to be exhibited throughout the hunt, with some colourful characters from the Elephant’s past to be found along the way!
Ugly Duck founder and Director Rosie Slay said: “City Hunt animates public spaces with the characters, tales and histories that make them special. We want local people to take pride in their area, for strangers to discover something they would never have known otherwise. Elephant & Castle has been changing at a rapid pace since the mobilisation of the regeneration masterplan; City Hunt is a chance to celebrate what’s already here and for the past not to be forgotten.”
As an extra encouragement for people to explore the treasures of Elephant & Castle, high scoring players will be rewarded with prizes sponsored by local businesses. These include tickets to the Cinema Museum, a term of swimming lessons at Peabody’s, Darwin Court, as well as a £250 bike voucher – so it’s really worth taking the time to complete each challenge!
Fancy getting involved? City Hunt Elephant & Castle will run from Thursday 24 October – Sunday 1 November. The start station is at Artworks Elephant and will be open on 24th, 25th and 28th October from 11am – 4pm, where players will also be able to pick up children’s illustrated maps. Players must pre-register at www.cityhunt.co.uk to take part.
