We’re back this week with a maker who is going beyond most to help people who rely on a wheelchair to get around.
Her invention all stemmed when she was backpacking around South East Asia when she noticed that she was almost the only wheel chair user around. After questioning why this was the case, she found that the price was almost 6 x the average annual salary!
It wasn’t until later when she was travelling through Jordan that she came across the idea of combining digital fabrication with open source design to create an invention which allows access to an affordable wheelchair and also caters to individual personal needs!

Rachael now sits on the board of three UK charities. The first is called Scope, which exists to change society for disabled people. The second is the Social Care Institute for Excellence, which tries to improve their practice in the sector. The last one is called Community Integrated Care, which supports people with learning disabilities, dementia or mental health difficulties.
