Fish and chips, the ultimate dinner time treat, has just become even more accessible to lucky residents of Stratford’s East Village. And we’re not talking any fish and chips either. Fish House is one of east London’s most loved fish restaurants; and they’ve just unveiled their second branch in the heart of E20.
Fish House is a family-run, independent fish and chips restaurant with a contemporary feel and a loyal customer fan base. The owners opened the first restaurant on Lauriston Road, Victoria Park back in 2007, and it is because of its popularity that they have recently launched their second branch in Stratford’s East Village.
The success of the business stems from the expertise and care the owners put into it. Gabs trained in Spain and worked for 10 years in restaurants and hotels. Along with his partner, Jo, the pair serve only the best seasonal and ethically sourced seafood on their menu and they work with the ethos – ‘simple, good quality ingredients cooked well’.
As well as the expert touch, the menu at Fish House is much more than what you’d find at your average fish and chip shop. Serving up the delights of Saffron Lemon Risotto with Scallops, Mussels and King Prawns, to Lobster Bisque, and not forgetting everyone’s favourite – battered fish and chips with mushy peas! They use absolutely no beer, dairy or animal fat and only cook their fish in rapeseed oil, making it lighter and much more guilt-free. They’ll even be introducing a gluten-free option within the next few weeks!
While the original Fish House is set within an old Victorian building, the new eatery is housed within a large, sleek space in the former Olympic Athletes’ Village. Customers can choose to dine in the 70-seater restaurant area, or order their catch to takeaway. East Village already has a rapidly blossoming community, and Gabs hopes that opening their second Fish House here will echo his experience of a strong community spirit where independent businesses have flourished.
“I like the vision of this area,” he said. “Good businesses make a place good to live in. I think any neighbourhood needs a decent fish and chip shop.” We couldn’t agree more!
So whether you’re too busy to cook or just a treat to takeaway, head down to Fish House to try out their catch of the day! Find them at 36 – 39 Victory Parade, E20 1FS.
