Never stop exploring: 5 virtual outings to keep you entertained this Bank Holiday

May 22, 2020

One of the most difficult realities of the current situation is the inability to get out, explore and discover so many new things. Wanderlust doesn’t cease to exist just because we can’t act on it.

The good news is that modern technology is able to transport us to places we’ve always been curious about, without even asking us to open our wallets! In an attempt to curb your cabin fever, we’ve selected the best virtual outings from across the globe – and beyond. Take a look:

Explore the Surface of Mars

Move over, Buzz Aldrin. Thanks to a high tech WebVR Experiment from Google and NASA, you too can visit Mars. Access Mars allows you to explore a 3D replica of the surface of Mars, as recorded by NASA’s Curiosity rover. Aside from providing you with entertainment, these images are also analysed by scientists and used to plan future visits. Until Elon Musk actually gets us there, we’d say this is a pretty good alternative.

Visit the Great Wall of China

You’d be lying if you said you didn’t want to visit the Great Wall of China. One of the 7 Wonders of the World; it spans 3,000 miles and has over 2,000 years of history. This epic virtual tour allows you to admire 360 degrees of rolling hills, radiant sun and ancient brickwork. It also has some great tips to get you planning and excited for when you can visit in person!

Watch Animals Live on Safari: from Elephants to Giraffes

If, like us, you’re really wishing you’d invested in a cuddly animal before all of this went down – this may be the outing for you. San Diego Zoo have gifted us with live cams of Pandas, Owls, Penguins and even Koala Bears! Our favourites are baby Elephants Kaia and Zuli.

Discover Canadian Polar Bears

Discovery Education and Polar Bears International have joined forces to bring us a fascinating broadcast, following Polar Bears on the Tundra. Complete with a Q&A, this 40 minute video gets to the heart of polar bear action in Churchill, Canada – while also exploring the complexities of the sea ice habitat and climate change. This is a great one for the kids, or anyone interested in the arctic ecosystem.

Witness the Aquarium Live

Aquariums may be closed to the public, but their beautiful inhabitants continue to swim, unawares. Georgia Aquarium’s live webcam series reveals the private lives of Sea lions, Sea otters, Piranhas and many more enchanting creatures. Warning: these videos are highly captivating and strangely satisfying.
