Close your eyes, take a deep breath. You are walking through London, the warm sun is gliding across your arms and face. You hear fountains trickling, birds twittering and children screaming with glee at the sight of an ice-cream van. It’s summer. Okay, well one can dream. And if the weatherman hasn’t realised it is summer, our calendar certainly has. We have rounded up a whole host of bright and exciting events coming up this summer in Newham to help you make the most of the sunshine months.
The Mayor’s Newham Show– July 13th & 14th
If you like the sound of free live music, cabaret, Jamie’s Ministry of food competitions, a helter skelter, a pop-up beach and donkeys (!) then you’re in for a treat. The Mayor’s show is the official starting point of the Newham summer calendar and promises to be a weekend of exclusive, free fun suitable for the whole family. Enjoy all the benefits of living in a bustling London community like East Village, with a village fete, Zumba, rowing machine challenges and countless food stalls. Just to top it off you can also see…
The Newham Carnival – July 13th
Who said carnivals are just for Brazil? Grab your sequins and pom poms and start practising your dance routine. This year’s carnival is ‘The Seasons’ and will celebrate the growth and change in Newham. The procession will depart from Rancliffe Road at 2pm and make its way through the High Street, Ron Leighton Way, Barking Road, Bartle Avenue and get back to Central Park at 4pm. This is sure to be a visual and musical treat for the whole family to enjoy, plus the procession will feature props used from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies. You also still have a chance to get involved, so if you fancy getting creative with your neighbours and some glitter, join one of the camps making costumes, floats and flags!
Everything you imagine when you hear the words ‘floating cinema’ is correct. The Floating Cinema was the summer success of 2012, showing a series of films on a beautifully constructed boat throughout the summer months. This year, it is bigger and more East London than ever. Devised by Hackney artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie, the boat will be the venue for a ten week programme of over 20 free and ticketed events. Events will range from intimate on-board screenings of films, to larger scale films projected to those lining the side of the banks. The screenings are all around the theme of ‘Extraordinary’ and will include Tim Burton classics, and there will also be hosted tours covering the little-known history of the Lea Valley area. Tickets will be released in phases so check the website regularly for updates.
Tea Dances– monthly
If the thought of carnivals and boats is all a bit too much, we have the perfect, relaxing yet thrilling activity for your summer months in Newham. For a mere £3, you can slip on your dancing shoes and join a monthly tea dance at the Old Town Hall. Inclusive in your £3 ticket, not only do you get a lovely dance with the ultimate gentleman or lavish lady, but entry into a free raffle – and refreshments! Grab your friends or even your kids and just try this one. Trust us, no one ever regrets a dance.
ABBA Magic- June 28th
We can’t think of a better way to spend a summer’s evening than singing along to some of ABBA’s all-time classics in the company of others. If you feel the same, the ABBA Magic ‘music tour is an event in the Newham calendar not to miss. This tribute act have been honing their musical skills for a successful 17 years, and this brand-new production is set to be the most elaborate and fantastical of them all.
In fact we are so excited about this show, we would love to send you and a friend to enjoy the show for free. Simply tell us which ABBA song is your favourite and why in the comment section below and whichever one makes us feel like a Dancing Queen (get it?) will get to see the ABBA Magic happen live. The competition will close on Wednesday 26th of June and the winners will be treated to the Friday night show on the 28th. Good luck!
