We love the next cuddly critter as much as the next, but maybe London’s new dog café is pushing it a tad too far. What’ll be next? A hipster hamster joint? The only cats (guys) and chicks (girls) we want to see are the ones in 1950s-named Hoxton bar Made in the Shade, which opens this Friday, with a soft launch tonight.
With success literally being in the name (Made in the Shade was slang for success back in the 50s) we are jazzed (excited) for this fat city (great place). The bar is the brainchild of three far out (cool) cocktail creators, Jeremy Thompson Jewitt, Jim Wrigley, and Peter Lewis. BBC celebrity chef Patrick William will be providing the delicious menu.
The food will be locally sourced, and use seasonal ingredients, so you know that it will both taste like crazy (really good), but also do like wow (really good). It will have a tapas style to encourage sharing with friends, and there will be a Caribbean twist to give you something new to try.
As tasty as the food sounds, the reason you should head to Made in the Shade is the cocktail menu. Internationally-acclaimed drinksmith Jim Wrigley has been given free rein to create whatever he liked and put it on the menu.
There are three drinks we have to recommend: the refreshing ‘Shady Maid Lemonade’ with Hendrick’s Gin; the long and luscious Buffalo Trace bourbon-based ‘Jonson ́s Reprieve’ (with freshly juiced carrot and turmeric!); and the ‘Thyme is on my side’ (Vodka with fresh squeezed blood orange juice and thyme-infused agave).
Interestingly the attention to detail of Made in the Shade goes all the way down to the ice in your glass. Hand cut from 30kg blocks of crystal clear coldness, ice will come both in long spears for tall drinks or thick and square for the ultimate drink on the ‘rock’. This isn’t just for show – the decreased surface area keeps your drink colder for longer and with less dilution, so you can really take your time to savour it.
So don’t expect any flakes, drips or drags, at Made in the Shade there will only be cool heads, and far-out chicks all decked out for a fun night.
