If you like the sweetness of an old-fashioned high tea but balk at the price tag, Bea’s is the perfect compromise. All the prettiness and occasion of the high tea but without the huge cost, Bea’s baguettes, scones, mini meringues and daily changing cupcakes come with a pot of tea – or stuff yourself silly with American-style cupcakes and cookies on a quick stop off. Bloomsbury is the original Bea’s, but you can also now find them in St. Paul’s, Chelsea and Maltby Street.
One of the best pastry makers in London and yet a well-kept secret, this tiny patisserie tucked away on Newington Green roundabout creates divine Parisienne-style tarts, fluffy quiches, mouth-wateringly strong espressos and pretty pastel-hued macarons. Our top tip? Get a takeaway cafe au lait and slice of tart and go and sit in the park opposite. It’s the perfect place for a gossip.
The Gucci of cakemakers, Cocomaya Fine Chocolatier & Artisan Baker is a fashion-meets-food concept, created by the former head of concept at Liberty and fashion consultant Walid al Damirji. A beautiful space in which to enjoy a leisurely tea and some sweet treats, Cocomaya is as delicious on the eyes as it is the taste buds. Chocolates are a specialty, using some of the rarest and finest cocoa beans in the world.
4: E5 Bakehouse
With a focus firmly on bread, the Bakehouse put it perfectly when they say, “We are passionate about sourdough and the lost traditions of our baking ancestors.” Bread is no laughing matter at the Bakehouse, where you can even learn the art of baking on a weekly course. Its awesome location close to London Fields and around the corner from the London Fields Brewery makes this the perfect place to stop off for a coffee and a loaf before picking up some organic beer and heading off to a picnic on sunny days.
This super-cute bakery is definitely one for the girls with its rainbow-hued cupcakes, oh-so-cute animal cookies and seriously decadent layer cakes. The sweet pink and white retro diner vibe delights adults and kids alike – it’s no wonder the masterminds behind this venture started out baking just for children’s parties. Celebrity clients include U2 and Kate Moss – pop in for a treat and you’ll soon see why.
